Welcome to SkillBuild. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.
SkillBuild, delivered by CITB, is the largest multi-trade skills competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.
A series of competitions sees the very best compete against each other to be crowned a winner in their chosen trade. Much like the Olympics, as each level of competition progresses, competitors will be tested not only on their technical abilities, but on their time management, character and commitment, and the competitions can help build confidence, self-esteem and vital life skills.
SkillBuild 2021 National Finals
We are delighted to announce that the SkillBuild 2021 National Finals will be held at the National Construction College (East) site in Bircham Newton, Norfolk.
Competitions will take place over the course of three days, from Tuesday 16 November to Thursday 18 November 2021.
There will be a final for each individual skill area, including:
- BRK Bricklaying
- CAR Carpentry
- CBM Furniture & Cabinet Making
- JOI Joinery
- PAD Painting & Decorating
- PLA Plastering
- PDS Plastering & Drywall Systems
- STO Stonemasonry
- WFT Wall & Floor Tiling
Unlike typical SkillBuild National Finals, there will unfortunately be no audience participation this year, due to potential restrictions that may be in place. However, accompanying adults and a small selection of invited guests will be permitted to attend.
As you may be aware, WorldSkills UK will not be running their multi-sector ‘LIVE’ event at the NEC this year, with individual competition organisers, such as SkillBuild, asked to consider running their own events. We are proud to be able to deliver the SkillBuild 2021 National Finals, ensuring the hard work and dedication of competitors and their learning providers is rewarded.
We are confident of a return to the multi-sector ‘LIVE’ format next year, but this year’s finals will still be a wonderful celebration of individual construction skills and determination. Featuring local and national press coverage, a closing ceremony, interviews with finalists, and more to be announced, we can’t wait to see you at the SkillBuild 2021 National Finals.
Finalists – next steps
- You will need to confirm your acceptance of the competition invitation by the given deadline
- You will be sent a comprehensive ‘delegate pack’ with full event details (such as accommodation and catering arrangements – all provided free of charge) and a competition schedule
- At the event, you will be set an 18-hour project in your selected skill, to complete across three days of competition and alongside the other SkillBuild National Finalists.
The full list of finalists, their college and participating skill will be released during early to mid-September. In the meantime, if you have any questions get in touch: email@example.com

SkillBuild 2021 Qualifiers
We would like to congratulate all competitors who took part in the SkillBuild 2021 Qualifiers for their sterling commitment, enthusiasm and high level of skill displayed throughout. This year’s qualifiers were unlike any other – due to Covid restrictions, Online Assessments and remotely-delivered Physical Tasks were introduced, and were met with an incredible response from competitors, who stepped up to the challenge of a new way of competing.
In total, almost 250 competitors participated in the qualifiers across a range of skill disciplines. We saw the very best of what construction apprentices and trainees have to offer at locations up and down the UK. The future of construction is bright with such a talented trainee workforce.
Participation certificates are being issued to all qualifier competitors, which you will receive shortly. If you did not reach the finals, taking part in the SkillBuild qualifiers is still an excellent way to boost your personal and professional development. Participating in the UK’s largest multi-trade skills competition can help set you apart from the rest for prospective future employers, while boosting your confidence, teamworking and technical skills.
Looking ahead: SkillBuild 2022
2022 may feel far away, but plans for next year’s SkillBuild competition are already well underway. With a return to face-to-face activities and the potential to progress to international competitions via WorldSkills UK, SkillBuild 2022 is set to be the biggest and best yet.
Due to social distancing restrictions and guidelines still being in place, we had to reduce our competition capacities this year. If you registered for SkillBuild 2021 but were unsuccessful in securing a place, please do come back and try again in 2022.
More information, including details on how to register, will be released in due course – we cannot wait to welcome you all back for SkillBuild 2022.
Interact with the competition across social media by using the hashtag #SkillBuild2021.
